Sweet Learning Before Christmas: Making Lemon Curd in English Class

Shortly before the Christmas holidays, some students from the 4A AHS English group swapped their textbooks for aprons and headed to the school kitchen for a very special lesson.

The goal was to make lemon curd, a traditional British/Irish spread. Lemon curd is a smooth, creamy mixture made from fresh lemons, sugar, butter, and eggs (which we left out). It has a bright yellow colour and a delicious balance of sweet and sour flavours. In the UK and Ireland, lemon curd is often enjoyed on toast, scones, or as a filling for cakes and desserts.

Working in small groups, the students measured ingredients, stirred carefully, and watched the mixture slowly turn into a creamy spread. Of course, all instructions and conversations took place in English, making the activity both educational and practical. Tasting and cooking together made learning English a hands-on experience and a lot of fun. The wonderful smell of lemons filled the room, and everyone was proud of the final result.

This pre-Christmas activity was a perfect way to combine language learning, teamwork, and creativity—and it showed that learning English can be both tasty and enjoyable!
